Ladies — If you’re anything like me, when you first got into fitness you had that freak-out moment. “Omg. I’m supposed to lift weights? So won’t I.. Bulk up and look like a female bodybuilder??”
In short- no. Because of your lack of testosterone. Unless you are taking steroids, you will not become ‘bulky.’ Lifting heavy weights with proper form will make ladies’ bodies leaner, smaller, and tighter. Now MEN will get bigger, because of their testosterone.

By leading an unhealthy life, you gain fat. But by lifting weights and doing cardio, you start to gain muscle. Obviously, grapefruits are bigger than tangerines. (#fruiteducation101) So you can GAIN weight, technically, when you start a fitness program, but your body will NOT look heavier. Which is why I dislike the scale.. But that’s for another day.
So what if you’re one of those cardio-lovers (maybe a runner, tennis player, etc) who never does any lifting? You may lose weight, but you’re also at risk to lose muscle. Muscle is the secret sauce of looking young — it gives your body a lean, strong look AND helps your cardio workouts become more effective. The more muscle you have in your body, the more calories burned during cardio exercises. (Read that last sentence over again. Let it sink in.)
Great lifting programs I have personally experienced:
DVD workouts :
21 Day Fix
Power yoga (check out power vinyasa studios in your town)
In (some) fitness gyms:
Les Mills Body Pump
Les Mills Body Combat
Summer is here- what a perfect time to tone your arms, legs, and abs. The best fitness advice I can give you is to focus on 3 points: cardio, lifting, and flexibility. Doing these 3 things consistently will increase endurance, strengthen & tone, and prevent injuries.
Be smart. Be open to things you haven’t tried yet. It’s never too late to start again.
Happy Friday y’all.
